What Are Adult Day Centers?

Adult Day services are a system of professionally delivered, integrated, home and community-based, therapeutic, social and health-related services provided to individuals over the age of 18 to sustain living within the community.

Adult Day Centers are an invaluable resource for individuals and families dealing with dementia and other chronic health care concerns by offering health care services along with therapeutic recreational and social events on a daily basis. Adults of all ages in need of functional support attend Adult Day Centers to spend their days in a safe place while remaining at home in the evenings. Adult Day Centers provide needed comfort for participants and respite for family members and caregivers. Adult Day Centers provide safe, quality care for frail and vulnerable adults.

What was MADSA?
The Michigan Adult Day Services Association (MADSA) was a coalition of adult day service providers throughout the state of Michigan. MADSA’s mission was to promote and support the growth and development of high-quality adult day services. MADSA offered a resource for service providers in addition to educators, researchers, advocates, volunteers and others who are involved in this field.

History of MADSA
The Michigan Adult Day Services Association was a voluntary, membership organization of those providing, interested in providing, or supporting adult day services in Michigan.  MADSA was established in 1978, by a small group of adult day center directors interested in networking, advocacy, marketing, sharing resources, and providing quality services while meeting established standards of care. MADSA partners with the Michigan's Aging Community Living and Supports Bureau and local Area Agencies on Aging to promote and ensure quality of adult day services throughout the state of Michigan.

Covid mandates closed adult day care centers across the state. After restrictions were lifted many adult day centers were not in positions to reopen and resume their programs and activities.  Those that did found it difficult to take time away from their centers to attend state-wide meetings.  This in turn made it difficult to compile a complete slate of officers, board members, and committee memberships.  As a result, the difficult decision was made to dissolve the association and join the MADSA membership with the Michigan Directors of Service to the Aging (MDSA) so adult day services would continue to have a voice in the state level discussions about senior service needs and solutions. Effective June 19, 2025 MADSA officially dissolved as an association.

Michigan adult day services association has dissolved effective June 19, 2025.

MADSA members have become members of the Michigan Directors of Service to the Aging effective June 19, 2025.  If interested in also becoming a member of MDSA check out their website at www.michigandsa.org.
